"Amazing Archery Elk Hunt"

Our hunting business is situated in the remote southeastern corner of Montana. The country we live in is very scenic with an abundance of excellent wildlife, including mule deer, antelope, elk and upland game birds. We also border the Custer National Forest.

Amazing Archery Elk Hunt
It was late September - warm days and cool evenings. My partner, Roger Billingsley, and I were out archery elk hunting. Little did I know, I was about to harvest the trophy of a lifetime - one that only a few would ever be able to witness.
We were in our north pasture about a mile from the lodge just a half hour before sundown. Knowing there was a spring over the next ridge, we dropped down into the forest to check for any sign of elk near the natural watering area. As we turned to head back to our vehicle, Roger spotted two cow and calf elk going into the timber. The elk were already in rut so we knew that there was a good chance there might be a bull nearby. Then, just off to the right, in the bottom of Indian Creek just 200 yards away was a bull elk. Cautiously we watched and did some cow calling, approaching to within 50 yards of the bull. We then saw a sight we surely did not expect. The bull elks horns were locked with another bull elk. The two had been fighting for breeding rights and one had been killed in the fight. However, the horns had locked together, making it impossible for the second bull elk to free himself of the ruins. We approached within 15-20 yards and I was able to shoot the live bull.
We loaded both the elk and were able to have a taxidermist prepare a mount depicting how they were found. The mount will be displayed in Cody, WY.
